The Standells sm Trivia Questions!

What is Standells' guitarist Tony Valentino's birth name, and where is he from?

Emilio Bellissimo, hailing from Sicily -- in Italy.

Which former Standells member quit the group, abandoning the band for nearly 14 years (1969-1983)?

Larry Tamblyn. He left the band in late 1969 and didn't return until the band played a few shows in 1983 and 1984 in California and Nevada. He then quit again in 1984 until 1986, when the band played 2 shows in California. Guitarist Tony Valentino kept The Standells going throughout, and holds the distinction of being the only Standells member to have never left the group!

What year did The Standells first use their name?

1963.

Contrary to what you may have heard, the Standells name (with 2 "ll"s) was first used in 1963, not in 1962 or 1964. Prior to the first use of The Standells in 1963, the group only ever used the Standels (with 1 "l").  All gig marquis photos, such as in Hawaii in 1962, all the way through our early 1963 Eureka/Ridgecrest performances, show 1 "l" being used.
All press shots and newspaper clippings show Standels, not Standells. There were no "typos" in these marquis photos or in the press or anywhere else. So, any claims by anyone out there that Standells with 2 "ll"s existed prior to 1963 are untrue! Never happened. Which is why there is not a single authentic photo, document or recording which can be produced by anyone that shows the name Standells being used before 1963! Beware the fakers who would have you believe otherwise...

For example, there was a song floating around in the early years called "The Girl In My Heart"- which has been claimed to have been pressed in 1963 or 1964 as "Larry Tamblyn and The Standells" (although no one's actually seen the 45 or a picture of it). This was not a Standells recording! It was a recording made per Larry's pre-Standells solo act, and if it was later tagged under his former label's subsidiary, it was probably the label owner simply trying to capitalize on the Standells' emerging success. Again, we've never seen seen the 45, so it probably doesn't even exist...and if it did...it's certainly not the Standells!!

Yes, there are those people floating around cyberspace who have trying desperately to "re-write" the band's history. But, at the end of the day, it can't be done.
